Rules[]

Unknown from previous Nationals, if a team has an unspecified amount of new dancers from their previous Regionals team, a representative from Absolute Dance must re-assess whether or not the team is still good enough to compete.[1]

It can be assumed that the new rules regarding the senior advanced division and intermediate advanced division will carry over from the previous Regionals. The rules from Regionals state that any team with member over 18 must compete in the harder senior advanced division whilst everyone else can compete in the intermediate advanced division.

Format[]

The 19th Annual Absolute Dance Nationals features the sixty-four winners of the Absolute Dance Regionals competitions across Canada. Unlike previous known editions, this competition is not strictly successive knock-outs and features a selection of non-elimination rounds in which studios are able to earn five-point advantages preceding a certain knock-out round. The competition begins with a soloist round in which all studios compete for a five-point advantage that can be used once at any point in the competition. The HypedIn challenge occurred before the beginning of the competition with each dance captain entering a dance video, the winner of this challenge (announced before the small group round) earns a five-point advantage heading into the small group round. Before the duet round, the top ten studios compete in a professional division round where a representative of each studio competes in solos to earn a five-point advantage for their studio, the dancers in this round can be professional dancers and do not have to be on the actual competing troupe.

The first knock-out round is a large group round followed by the small group round and then the duet round. Studios do not compete in one-on-one matchups but instead are scored against all the qualified studios in that particular round. Only the top twenty highest scoring studios move through the large group round (fourty-four studios eliminated) followed by the top ten through the small group round (ten studios eliminated) and then the top two through the duet round (eight studios eliminated).

The top two studios following the duet round face off in the finals. Each studio performs a ten-person dance to crown a winner.

Rounds[]

HypedIn Challenge[]

This round takes place during "History Has its Eyes on You".

Each dance captain must upload a dance video to HypedIn on behalf of their team. The winner would win five bonus points moving into the small group round. The top three teams were announced the day before nationals.[2] The winner was announced by Margo before the second day of competition ("What I Did for Love"). The top three finalists were Eric from Dancetopia, Aliya from AcroNation, and Kenzie from The Next Step.[2]

  • Winner: Aliya from AcroNation

Soloist Round[]

This round takes place during "All That's Known".

The solo round takes place before the main competition officially begins and features all 64 competing studios. There are no eliminations in either round; instead, the teams (or team) of whomever wins the overall titles of National Soloist receive a five-point advantage going forward, which can only be used once.[2]

In this round, each studio will elect a single soloist (male or female) to compete for a soloist title, the winning dancer gives their team a 5-point advantage. The Next Step Dance Studio’s soloist is Ebby.

  • National Soloist: Cleo of AcroNation.

Large Group Preliminary Round[]

This round also takes place during "All That's Known".

Trivia[]

  • After Absolute Dance were acquired by a new company, the competition was delayed a year from 2017 to 2018.
  • After the events from Season 7, The Next Step Dance Studio was going to be represented by B-Troupe at the upcoming 19th Annual Nationals. However, A-Troupe returned from Dancemania and wanted to go to Nationals. But in Season 8, TNS took part in the Challenge and the dancers who were on B-Troupe didn't make the team, so a new A-Troupe was formed.
