An aerial is an acro move that is frequently performed throughout the show.

History[]

Aerials are commonly performed by dancers on the show.

In a deleted scene from "The Final Cut" in Season 2, Riley reveals that James taught her how to do an aerial and in the same scene, Michelle says that that is new, thus indicating that James taught Riley how to do an aerial off-scene between Seasons 1 and 2.[1]

In "Game, Set, and Match" in Season 3, Amanda performs an aerial for the first time, to which Tess says that Amanda learned something new, thus indicating that Amanda learned how to do an aerial off-scene between Seasons 2 and 3.[2]

Piper is initially unable to perform an aerial, causing Angela to chastise her and force her to practise it in front of the entirety of A-Troupe as they do planks.[3]

Davis attempts to teach Piper the move for their audition for the contemporary routine for Regionals but to no avail, causing Davis to agree not to do an aerial in the routine. During the audition, due to Piper's thinking that Davis is dancing better than her, Piper attempts an aerial and successfully lands it for the first time.[4]

Prior to the performance of the contemporary dance at Regionals, Angela reminds Piper about how she is unable to do an aerial. Piper lets Angela get into her head, causing her to fail her aerial in the dance, resulting in The Next Step's loss in the round.[5] Due to their previous loss in the contemporary round, Piper asks Emily and Michelle to remove her aerial in the finals routine. Michelle complies, but Emily does not, as she knows the current choreography is worthy of winning Regionals. As the rest of the troupe prepare to take the stage, Piper hides away backstage, overwhelmed with her anxiety about falling again. Emily reassures her that she can do it. Piper is able to perform the aerial successfully in the routine.[6]

Description[]

An aerial is an advanced acro move. It is a cartwheel without touching hands to the ground.

Trivia[]

  • Most dancers on The Next Step are able to perform an aerial. Even dancers with few acro skills are eventually able to perform an aerial and over the course of the show, three dancers - Riley, Amanda and Piper - highlight its difficulty and their eventual mastery of the skill.
