Synopsis[]

When Noah's fate at The Next Step is put to a vote, arguments ensue over what to do.[1]

Plot[]

In Studio A, Noah is leading A-Troupe in a rehearsal of their finals routine for Regionals. He confesses that it is hard to focus, as he is still unsure whether or not he should leave the team to allow them to compete in the Intermediate Advanced division. Noah approaches various dancers to give them corrections; as he passes Davis, he tells Richelle to make sure she knows the choreography, and Davis confesses that she is finding it hard to catch up with a routine that everyone else has been rehearsing for weeks. In the corner, Ozzy and Kingston are working on their handstands; Ozzy confesses that he thought handstands were something they both found hard, but Kingston's seem to be much better. Noah commends Kingston, and tells Ozzy to work harder, much to his chagrin. Noah surveys the room, and confesses that he wants to believe that A-Troupe could win in the Senior Advanced Division - but he doesn't know for sure.

Later, Kingston is rehearsing with Ozzy, and confesses that he has been working with him to improve his dancing since he lost his dance battle against Elliot. Ozzy notices that Kingston has picked up their choreography very quickly, and questions how he has managed to spend so much time dancing when he himself is struggling to fit extra rehearsal time into his schedule; Kingston says that he has just made dance his priority, and confesses that Ozzy simply doesn’t work as hard as he does. After a moment, Ozzy requests a break, and casually looks in Kingston’s bag for a phone charger - until he stumbles on a piece of paper revealing his history grade, and is taken aback by how low it is. Kingston angrily reprimands him for going through his stuff, and claims that the low grade is nothing to be concerned about - but Ozzy is dubious, and worriedly confesses that if Kingston doesn’t do better in history, he could be kicked off the team.

In Studio 1, Ty and Amy are rehearsing their pas de deux for Regionals under Simone’s supervision. Ty confesses that even though he and Amy are going out, her strict rehearsal schedule means they don’t get to spend much time together, so he is enjoying the fact that he can at least rehearse with her. As they run through the routine, it becomes clear that Ty’s ballet technique is far inferior to Amy’s, and Simone confesses that the current duet would definitely not win Regionals; however, Ty believes that he is doing great, and enthusiastically expresses this when they finish their run-through. After telling Ty he can go, Simone asks Amy what she thinks of the dance; Amy confesses that although the rehearsal went badly, Ty is working hard, and she feels she owes him her support. She expresses this to Simone, but Simone responds that if they want the duet to get better, she thinks they should replace Ty. Amy confesses that Simone may be right, but she hates the thought of hurting Ty’s feelings.

With A-Troupe gathered in Studio A, Noah enters with Emily and Michelle. Emily immediately brings everyone up to date on the situation; because Noah is eighteen, they will have to compete in a higher age division at Regionals. Kenzie confesses that she doesn’t know why they weren’t told this sooner, and Piper becomes visibly nervous. Michelle then reveals that if Noah left the team, they could stay in the lower division, which instantly sends the dancers up in arms; Jacquie and Summer both confess that Noah can’t leave the team. Noah reveals that he has decided to leave it up to the rest of A-Troupe, and they will be taking a secret vote. Michelle uncovers a jar full of red and white marbles, and Noah explains that they must drop a white marble in the jar if they want him to stay, and a red marble if they want him to go - and because they are a team, the vote must be unanimous, which means if there is even one red marble in the jar, he will leave.

A-Troupe are discussing what to do about Noah, and soon begin disagreeing. Kenzie reveals that she joined A-Troupe to win Regionals, and she isn’t prepared to lessen their chances just to keep Noah, while Henry and Kingston argue about whether they can vote a friend off their team with no consequences. Summer encourages everyone to believe that they could win in an older age division, and Richelle states that she thinks they could do it if they train even harder, a prospect that the others instantly shoot down - while Jacquie confesses that she can’t believe anyone on the team is even thinking about getting rid of Noah. As Piper starts to look more and more upset, Richelle reminds everyone that they wouldn’t be where they are now if it wasn’t for Noah, and confesses that she believes they can win with him on the team.

Amy is waiting for Ty in Shakes & Ladders, and confesses that she isn’t looking forward to the conversation she has to have with him. As Ty sits down, Amy asks if they can talk about the duet, and he asserts again that he thinks it is going great - but Amy gently reveals that he isn’t doing well enough, and she has decided that someone else should replace him. Ty appears to take it well, choosing to focus on the other dances he can be featured in - but Amy believes that he may be more hurt than he looks. She asks if they are still going out on Friday, and Ty assures her they are, before abruptly leaving; he confesses that if they can’t even see each other at dance, he doesn’t know where their relationship can go from here. Amy confesses that she knows how excited Ty was about their duet, but he had to be replaced if they want to win Regionals.

While A-Troupe gathers in Studio A, Noah dances alone in Studio 1. He confesses that he knows letting the others decide his fate is risky, but it is the right thing to do. Meanwhile, the dancers begin dropping their marbles in the jar. Jacquie confesses that she is voting for Noah to stay - not because he is her boyfriend, but because he is their best dancer. Summer also confesses that she is voting for him to stay, and Kenzie confesses that she isn’t sure what she’ll do. After the last marble is dropped, Michelle picks up the jar and reveals the contents - nine white marbles and one red one. Everyone is visibly shocked, and some are clearly angry - and Michelle confesses that she doesn’t know what they’ll do without Noah.

A-Troupe is furiously arguing about the vote, and speculating about who wanted Noah off the team. Richelle guesses that it was Ozzy, and Ozzy denies this; Summer guesses that it was Kingston, and Kingston says he would never vote Noah out; Jacquie notes that Kenzie was the most convinced that Noah should go, and outright accuses her of being the one voter - and in response, Kenzie simply reveals her red marble, which is still in her hand. Everyone soon begins arguing again, and Kenzie rashly confesses that maybe Jacquie dropped the red marble. Emily quickly halts the argument, and informs them that even though they are upset, they have to respect that the vote was secret. As she and Michelle leave to find Noah, Emily confesses that she has no idea how they will break the news to Noah.

Thalia is watching AcroNation’s ballet duet for Regionals, which now features Amy and Simone, and confesses that she is impressed. As they finish, she commends Amy on her decision to switch Ty with Simone, and cheerfully comments that Simone seems to be preparing Amy to be dance captain. Simone is instantly angered, and confesses that nobody is going to take her dance captaincy. As Thalia leaves, Amy expresses her enthusiasm about their duet to Simone - and is confused when she coldly brushes off her compliment and walks away. She notes that she seems to be hurting everyone’s feelings, and wonders if she has any friends left at AcroNation.

Ozzy is waiting in the locker room with books and notes, and confesses that now Noah is off the team, he can’t let Kingston’s bad grades force him to leave A-Troupe. As Kingston walks in, Ozzy brightly informs him that since he is helping him with his dancing, he has decided to help him with his history, and offers to be his "study buddy". However, Kingston refuses his request and storms out, confessing that he doesn’t need Ozzy's help to get on top of his schoolwork.

Noah is retrieving his things from Studio A, while taking it in one last time. Suddenly, Piper appears behind him, and the two begin talking; he asks her what she is still doing here, and she says that she was hoping to work on her aerial. Noah offers to help her, and though Piper is convinced that he can’t seriously want to after having such a bad day, he insists. After giving her some pointers, he assures her that she will master her aerial soon, and she thanks him. He then prepares to leave - but Piper calls him back, and admits that it was her who voted him off the team. Noah is taken aback, and Piper reveals that she did it because she can’t face competing in an older division. Although he admits that he never imagined the one voter would have been Piper, Noah accepts it - and tells her that he can’t wait to see her land an aerial at Regionals. As Noah walks out of the studio, Piper suddenly questions her decision, and confesses that voting Noah out may have been a big mistake.

The next day, A-Troupe is gathered in Studio A, and Emily and Michelle make an announcement - they will be competing in the Senior Advanced Division at Regionals. Just as everyone begins voicing their confusion, Emily gestures towards the door; she happily reveals that Noah is back on A-Troupe, and the team embraces him joyfully. However, Emily soon cuts their celebration short, and reveals that because they are officially competing in a higher division, the level of difficulty must be increased for all of their routines - and no one is guaranteed a spot in any of them. Kingston confesses that he already working hard, but he will have to work harder, while Noah confesses that the whole team will have to work harder because of him - so they have to win.
