“ | It won't be long before I'm a main dancer on A-Troupe. | ” |
— Cleo |
"Alternate Universe" is the 3rd episode of Season 7 of The Next Step and the 183rd episode overall. It aired on January 22, 2020 on CBBC.
Synopsis[]
"Auditions for the alternate spot on A-Troupe get under way."[1]
Plot[]
Studio A is host to a range of dancers hoping to score the final two alternate spots on A-Troupe. Emily is dismissive towards the idea of alternates, stating that it creates unnecessary competition within the team, and that if they did need another dancer they could always pull one up from B-Troupe. Izzy, Ozzy's sibling is one of the prospective auditioning dancers, Ozzy is excited at the prospect of his sibling being on the same troupe as him but is equally, if not more, excited that they may deny Heath an alternate spot. Izzy runs into Winnie, Winnie recognises them but Izzy does not reciprocate the same familiarity. Winnie states that she no longer has romantic feelings for Ozzy after they decided they would better off as friends. Marcus introduces himself to Ethan, however the latter brushed the gesture off stating the he is the best dancer here. Marcus, not wanting to be upstaged, also boasts about his prospects of making the team, the two bond over their competitive nature and declare themselves "best friends". Presley walks into Studio A and declares, in talking heads, that it is her dream to go to Nationals and that she is the best dancer there, she turns to Heath and asks him how he felt. Heath replies that he is, in fact, the "best dancer in the room" before both him and Presley turn to an unknown dancer, later revealed as Cleo, with Presley stating his over-confidence may be mis-placed. Cleo states she is looking for a spot on the Nationals team after her previous studio lost at Regionals. Emily is seen walking amongst the auditionees as they warm-up, she turns to Jude and asks her to remove her jewellery, Jude then states in Talking Heads that this is her first audition and that Emily has little idea of the importance the jewellery has to her.

- Cleo and Heath are the alternates for Nationals, meaning A-Troupe has no open spots.
- Izzy is introduced in this episode. They were previously seen in the The Off Season: Season 3.
- Ethan, Izzy, Jude and Marcus are likely auditioning for B-Troupe.

Continuity[]
- Emily reaffirms her distaste for having alternates, which is first mentioned in "No Good Deed."
- Richelle reasserts her desire to be dance captain, which first became known in "Anything You Can Do, I Can Do Better."
Behind the Scenes[]
- Brennan Clost is credited as an assistant choreographer for this episode.
Errors[]
- Emily claims that solo auditions are always followed by cuts and then group auditions, but prior to this episode, this system is only used during the auditions for the Nationals team in Season 2. However, given the similarities, she could mean that this is specifically the way that auditions for the Nationals team always work.
- Emily claims there is no jewellery allowed in Studio A, but she seemingly has no qualms about the dancers wearing rings, earrings, nose-rings and cartilage piercings, and is herself wearing a necklace.
- It is possible that she means the dancers are not allowed to wear big and distracting jewellery; the accessory in question is bracelets, which are particularly likely to get in your way when dancing.
- Emily states that having alternates isn't a good idea because it creates competition within the team. However, in "Only You", she states that competition within a team is a good thing in regards to having a dance captain.
- After Emily calls the cut dancers forward Izzy states that her number wasn't called and states that perhaps she wasn't as good as she had initially thought. It is possible that this is a mistake, that she believed the dancers called forward had reached the group audition until she heard Emily state that the dancers who she had just called forward were actually cut, or that it was initially planned for these dancers to reach the group auditions yet was later changed to be that these dancers were cut.
Production Errors[]
- The dancers auditioning for the alternate spots are numbered from 1 to 22, but only fifteen dancers are present. However, it is possible that seven more dancers had signed up and were simply absent from the auditions.
- The seven missing numbers are 1, 6, 12, 18, 19, 20 and 21.
