"Amy's Prom Has Got It Goin' On" is the 9th episode in Season 6 of The Next Step and the 163rd episode overall. It aired on October 20, 2018.

Synopsis[]

The announcement that TNS is going to hold a prom sends the dancers into a "promposal" frenzy with surprising pairings.[1]

Plot[]

Henry comes into the locker room to get ready for rehearsal, and is taken aback when he sees the tuxedo he returned to the rental store in his locker. Amy then enters behind him, and playfully asks if she got the right size; Henry asks why she got the suit back, and is thrilled when Amy reveals that she wants to throw a prom at The Next Step Dance Studio to make up for the one Henry had to miss. Amy confesses that she has been wondering if there is something more between them ever since they almost kissed in the parking lot, and Henry excitedly confesses that if Amy is willing to do this for him, it must mean that she feels something for him. Amy then pointedly comments that since Henry already has a tuxedo, all he needs now is a date - but Henry doesn't take the opportunity to ask her to prom, confessing that he wants the moment to be special.

In Studio A, Noah is taking Henry, Richelle, Jacquie, Summer and Kingston through their opening dance for Absolute Dance WildStylz; however, Henry confesses that he is distracted, as he is planning to ask Amy to prom when she comes into the studio. As Noah initiates a break, he confesses that everyone is very excited about Amy's prom, and they have all been planning "promposals" - including him. Noah gets out his guitar, and begins singing a romantic song to Jacquie, who is overjoyed. During the song, various other dancers come to watch, including Amy, who gushes to Henry about how romantic Noah's promposal is; Henry realizes that Noah has set a standard he will not meet, and vows to make his own promposal bigger and better. Noah finishes his song and officially asks Jacquie to prom; she happily accepts, and they embrace. Piper then confesses that while this promposal was sweet, she doesn't want one herself, and mentions to Finn that she hopes she doesn't see any more that day. Finn responds by asking Piper to go to prom with him; she instantly turns him down.

Ozzy approaches Richelle in Shakes & Ladders, and asks to talk to her. Richelle dismissively asserts that she will not go to prom with him, but Ozzy reveals that he wouldn't have asked her anyway, as he knows she is dating Elliot. He then asks why she would go out with someone like him, and informs her that he thinks they should break up. Richelle instantly assumes that Ozzy is jealous, and orders him to stay out of her personal life; Ozzy confesses that it may seem like he just wants Elliot out of the way, but he is genuinely worried that Richelle will get hurt.

As Emily is working in her office, a J-Trouper named Presley approaches her. Emily confesses that she is a lot like Richelle — she is determined, but can be annoying. Presley says that she has heard J-Troupe aren't allowed to attend prom, and protests that they should be allowed to go. Emily asks if they know their four-person dance yet; Presley tentatively claims that they "almost" do, and Emily bitingly replies that if they were ready to go to prom, they would know that "almost" wasn't good enough.

Henry is teaching some choreography to Noah, Finn and Summer. He confesses that it is part of his promposal to Amy, as he wants to show his gratitude that she is throwing this prom for him. Summer confesses that she loves Henry's promposal, and she wishes someone would do something like this for her. Suddenly, Amy enters, and asks what they are all rehearsing for; in a panic, Henry tells her that they are working on a promposal for Finn. Amy asks who he is promposing to, and Finn hesitantly says that he doesn't know yet, but he wants to be prepared for when he decides; both Summer and Noah comment that Finn is a terrible liar. Henry then cuts in, saying that he thinks big promposals are overrated, and that he wouldn't want to do anything like this. Amy asks if this means he isn't planning to ask anyone, and Henry suggests that he might just go with Kingston and Ozzy, much to Amy's dismay. While Henry is content that his surprise is still a secret, Amy confesses that she feels foolish, as she now believes that she is throwing a prom for someone who doesn't even like her.

As Ozzy plays cards with Kingston in Shakes & Ladders, he asks him if he is taking anyone to prom; Kingston reveals that his own school prom is on the same night, and he and Kenzie are going to it as friends. He jokingly asks if Ozzy is planning to ask Richelle, but Ozzy denies this. Just then, Kingston notices Elliot walking into the café, and Ozzy mentions that he is Richelle's boyfriend, much to Kingston's surprise. Kingston remarks that he still doesn't trust him, and that he could be spying on them; Ozzy pounces on Kingston's theory, and is instantly certain that Elliot is using Richelle. Kingston casually suggests that they should follow him, and Ozzy immediately races after Elliot, with Kingston close behind him.

In Studio A, Richelle and Elliot perform a duet. Richelle confesses that Elliot was one of the only people to come and see her after she went to hospital, and their relationship progressed from there. As they dance, Ozzy and Kingston observe them from behind a door; Ozzy grudgingly confesses that they have great chemistry. When the dance ends, Elliot begins talking about how he dislikes "frivolous activities" such as proms, and Richelle assures him that she didn't think he would want to go — but Elliot then brings out a sign saying "PROM?", and reveals that he is willing to be "frivolous" if they are going to do it together; Richelle delightedly accepts his invitation. Kingston confesses that he may have underestimated how nice Elliot can be, while Ozzy comments that the promposal has only made him feel worse. Suddenly, Elliot notices Kingston and Ozzy, and scornfully remarks that "B.D." and "the little one" are there. Though initially confused, Kingston quickly becomes crestfallen, realizing that B.D. stands for "Basement Dancer". Richelle confesses that Elliot is simply bad with names, and that they shouldn't take it personally - though both clearly have already.

As Amy puts together a paper-chain in the Studio 1 office, Ty enters and asks what she is doing; Amy replies that she is decorating for her prom, but she isn't sure she even wants to hold it anymore. When Ty asks why, Amy dodges the question, and instead asks him for advice on what "someone" should do if they almost kissed their friend, but now the friend is avoiding them. Ty responds that if someone genuinely liked someone else, he is sure they wouldn't try to avoid them or pretend they didn't almost kiss. Amy confesses that Ty is right, and her moment with Henry must have meant more to her than it did to him.

In Shakes & Ladders, Richelle and Jacquie converse excitedly about prom. Both reveal that they have already bought their dresses, but as Richelle starts describing various details about her dress to Jacquie, it slowly becomes clear that Jacquie's shares a lot of the same features — and sure enough, after going to look at the two dresses in the locker room, they realise they have each bought one exactly the same. Both girls immediately insist that the other one wears a different dress, but it becomes obvious that neither of them are willing to back down. Eventually, they decide that they will both return their dresses, though neither is happy about it.

In Studio A, Presley and three other J-Troupers are performing their four-person dance for Emily, hoping that she will let them attend prom if they do well. Emily confesses that although the routine isn't perfect, she can tell that they've worked very hard. As soon as the dance ends, Presley asks Emily what her decision is - and Emily tells them to be there at 5:30 to help her with refreshments. The J-Troupers instantly begin celebrating, until it sinks in that they will not actually be going to prom as guests — but they decide that they are happy to be going regardless.

In Studio 1, Ty is now helping Amy with decorations. As they blow up balloons, Henry suddenly enters and asks if he can borrow some, claiming he needs them for Finn. Amy grudgingly lets him have them, confessing that she was hoping he might still ask her to prom, but he seems to care more about Finn's promposal than her. After Henry leaves, Ty asks Amy if she will go to prom with him. Amy is conflicted, as although she genuinely likes Ty, she would still rather go with Henry.

In Studio A, Summer is rehearsing her solo for the convention, while Piper sits by the entrance. As Emily walks by, she notices that Piper seems down, and asks her what's wrong; though she initially claims it's nothing, Piper eventually admits that she doesn't understand why everyone else is so excited for prom, as she finds everything related to it stressful rather than fun. Emily concedes that prom isn't necessarily that great, but assures her that it doesn't have to be stressful, and she doesn't need a date or a dress — all she has to do is show up and have a good time. Piper is enthused by this, and realises that maybe she can enjoy prom after all. As Emily leaves, she suddenly realises that she has been much more lenient towards the dancers lately, and worries that she is turning into Michelle. As Summer cools down after her rehearsal, she decides to try and help Piper cheer up, and invites her to do something "dance-related" with her.

In Shakes & Ladders, Ozzy sits down in front of Elliot, and demands that he tell him what his intentions with Richelle are. Elliot retorts that it is none of his business, but Ozzy claims that as he cares about Richelle, that makes it his business. Reluctantly, Elliot informs Ozzy that he cares about Richelle too, and that whether he likes it or not, he will have to get over her. Ozzy is saddened by Elliot's response, and confesses that he may be right.

Later, Amy is waiting in the lobby, and reveals to a passing Ty that Henry asked her to meet him there. Just then, music suddenly starts playing, and Henry, Finn, Summer, Noah, and Piper — whom Summer has brought into the routine - all appear, and start doing the promposal choreography; Amy is overjoyed, realizing that Henry was planning to ask her to prom all along. As they perform their routine, Noah and Summer confess that it is going extremely well, and even Piper admits that this promposal is "cute". Only Ty is unhappy, as he is now sure that he has no chance with Amy. As the routine ends, the dancers turn around to reveal the word "PROM?" written on the back of their T-shirts, and Henry finally asks Amy to go to prom with him. However, to everyone's surprise, Amy merely apologises, and reveals that she has agreed to go with Ty. Unable to respond, Henry simply walks away. Amy confesses that she wanted to say yes, but she doesn't feel she can bail on Ty, and it dawns on her that she should have just asked Henry herself. Henry is distraught that he didn't ask Amy sooner, and confesses that she has planned the whole prom for him — and now he doesn't want to go.

Continuity[]

Errors[]

  • When rehearsing Amy's promposal, only four dancers (Henry, Summer, Finn and Noah) are present. Summer than adds Piper to the performance at a later date. At the very end of the performance the five dancers spelled out PROM? with their T-shirts, although this would mean that during rehearsals this was either not an idea or they were waiting for a fifth, unknown member and due to the suddenness of Piper's inclusion it seems implausible that the T-shirt idea was created with this inclusion in mind or that any of the dancers could obtain the T-shirts within the timeframe between Piper's inclusion and the actual dance.

Production Errors[]

  • In the "Previously on The Next Step" segment, Ozzy says "Everyone hates Elliot! And now he's Richelle's boyfriend?", something he has never said in previous episodes.
