As well as their normal use, ballet barres have also served other purposes:
- The ballet barres are used to mark the sides of the imaginary river when James, West, Eldon and Hunter act out in Studio A, and later the Music Room after Miss Kate throws them out, the riddle that Riley has set as #8 on her list.
- When Luther Brown helps James, West, Eldon and Hunter with their small group routine for Nationals in Studio A, he has the boys carry out a self-control exercise that involves racing in slow-motion, for which he sets up a finish line consisting of two ballet barres with a long line of yellow CAUTION tape tied between them.
The ballet barres in Studio A are black with silver joints on the corners at the top, where the central rail joins the main barre, and where the barre joins the feet, which are silver at the ends.
The ballet barres in Studio 1 are similar to those in Studio A, but are white with a pale brown central rail, have flat feet, and there are no joints on the corners at the top or where the central rail joins the main barre.
- Black and silver are initially the uniform colours for a ballet barre.
