Contemporary is a dance style that is featured on the show.

As of Season 8, there are two contemporary dancers in A-Troupe: Jude and Kenzie.

History

Contemporary dance borrows from numerous other genres, such as jazz, lyrical, ballet, hip-hop and modern.[1] Unlike ballet, it is versatile and improvisational, and is often done in bare feet.[1]

During the early stages of the show, most dancers at The Next Step Dance Studio are contemporary dancers, easily outnumbering any members of the studio that specialize in other genres. In Season 6, for the first time since the show started, the number of contemporary dancers are outnumbered vastly by both acro and hip-hop dancers.[2] In Season 7, for the first time since the show started, there is no sole contemporary dancer on A-Troupe since Piper is also a jazz dancer, Kenzie and Richelle are also acro dancers (the latter also being a ballet dancer), Summer is also a jazz funk, funk, jazz and lyrical dancer, and Ozzy is also a hip-hop dancer.[3][4][5]
