"Dance, Dance" is the 3rd episode in Season 1 of The Next Step and the 3rd episode overall. It first aired on March 13, 2013.
Synopsis[]
The A-Troupe is split into two teams to test the leadership skills of Emily and Michelle.
Plot[]
In the competition for the title of dance captain, both Emily and Michelle must create a routine with four other dancers. The person with the better choreography will win. Per Chris's decision, Emily's group members are Chloe, Tiffany, Eldon, and Daniel and Michelle's are James, West, Stephanie, and Riley. Emily calls dibs on Studio A, so Michelle's group gets Studio B to rehearse. Emily and Stephanie are outraged, not only at the scenario as a whole but at being separated. Emily orders Stephanie to tell her everything that happens, which Stephanie agrees to due to E-Girl rule #19 — an E-Girl must do whatever she can to protect Emily.
West witnesses James at Squeezed and, wanting James to like him, silently challenges him to a dance-off by cornering him and dancing in front of him, since that is how new dancers were initiated into his old dance crew. James is irritated by the inconvenience, but admittedly intrigued. James eventually becomes overwhelmingly frustrated by the wordless stand-off and leaves.
Emily practices her routine with her group, with both Chloe and Eldon elated to be working with her. Meanwhile, Michelle's group is stretching when Michelle asks her fellow dancers what they should so. Stephanie rudely tells her that she should know, as she is Miss Nationals Soloist, flabbergasting West and James. Daniel asks Emily for a water break during rehearsal, but Emily refuses, making Daniel wish he was on Michelle's team. Meanwhile, Michelle suggests that they do a warm-up called dance-imals, in which everyone dances like they are an animal. Everyone except Stephanie enjoys the warm-up, although Riley admits that they should start their routine. As Emily's group continues to practice, Chloe tells Emily that she has to leave; unbeknownst to any of her peers, Chloe has a job since her father lost his own. Emily refuses to let Chloe leave.
Michelle's group finally begins its routine. Since the routine is actually quite good, Stephanie decides that she has to do something to ensure that Emily remains a dance captain. Feeling confident about their dance, Michelle lets the group finish rehearsal, which Riley silently deems a poor idea. Emily's group still rehearses in Studio A, with the dancers exhausted. After seeing Riley enter the studio, Emily lets the team have a two-minute break so that she can gauge the competition. Riley comforts Emily about her routine but confesses that she is disappointed in Emily for how threatened she is of Michelle.
James is in the office with his mom, Deborah, and Chris, discussing James's poor grades. Deborah believes James to be focusing too much on dance at the expense of his studies and wishes to pull him from the studio. Chris explains that such an action will have a negative effect on the troupe and, after Chris agrees to help James with math, Deborah ultimately lets James stay on the condition that his grades improve.
Some of the E-Girls converse in Squeezed about their routines. Stephanie tells Emily not to worry, as she knows exactly what to do, causing Riley to silently wish luck to Michelle since she knows what Stephanie is capable of. West, Chloe, and Daniel sit together in another corner of the store, with Daniel and Chloe revealing how tiring rehearsal was to West. Upon seeing James enter the store, West dances in front of him again, merely humouring Chloe and Daniel who have become accustomed to West's behaviour on B-Troupe. As soon as James leaves, West resumes his conversation with Chloe and Daniel.
In her office, Kate and Chris ask Emily and Michelle about the state of their routines. Michelle professes her readiness and, despite Emily asking for a few more minutes to clean up the routine, they are asked to perform. Emily's group dances first and, at the routine's onset, Emily snaps directly in Michelle's face. As they watch the routine, James confesses that it's too bland and West confesses that it merely showcases Emily. After Emily's group's routine, which Michelle is complimentary of, Michelle's group takes the floor. Stephanie confesses that if she has anything to do with it, the dance is not going to make Michelle dance captain.
Michelle's group performs and Stephanie throws the dance, upsetting her group members, but thrilling Emily. Upon Chris's angry inquiry, Michelle attempts to assure him that all of the dancers claimed they were prepared, but Stephanie lies that she was under-rehearsed. Visibly upset at the performance and what they perceive as Michelle's lack of vigour, Chris and Kate leave to talk.
While Chris thinks that Michelle should get another chance, Kate is not so sure. Meanwhile, Emily thanks Stephanie for throwing the dance. Outraged at this injustice, Riley tells the two that what happened was unfair, but is coerced into submission and apologizes.
Kate and Chris return from the office and reveal that the dance captain is Emily, causing immediate and vocal outrage and retaliation. Kate regards the situation in shock. Chris leaves and shortly returns with a bin full of ping-pong balls (borrowed from the sporting goods store upstairs), which he empties over the dance floor, saying that if the dancers can't clear all the balls in two minutes, they will have to do intense exercise for four hours. While cleaning up the balls, West suddenly begins dancing in front of James and James finally complies to the dance-off. Eventually, the other dancers join in, momentarily forgetting about the drama.
