Biography

Before the show

Deborah gave birth to James, Piper, and two unnamed daughters.[2]

Season 1

Deborah is concerned about James, as his grades are so low that he risks failing, and feels that James has been spending too much time at dance and not concentrating on school. She threatens to take him out of the studio unless his grades improve; Chris promises that he will tutor him.[1]

Deborah james season 1

Deborah watches James expectantly as he tells his peers about his situation.

When James's grades get even worse, Deborah decides to permanently remove him from the studio.[4] However, when James tells A-Troupe that he's leaving forever, his team is devastated and Michelle begs Deborah to reconsider. After thinking about it, Deborah decides to take James out of the studio for two weeks with complete omission from dance, and promises that he will return if his grades improve. Deborah tells James that he's grounded until his grades improve. Deborah warns James that if his grades don't improve she'll pull him out of The Next Step for good and send him to military school.[4]

Season 2

Along with Riley, Deborah accompanies James to the DMV for his driving test. When the driving instructor informs her that James has failed, she is automatically defensive and goes on about James's conscientiousness and great driving; she is relieved to discover it is a joke.[1]

Deborah later introduces Kathy to Arthur.[5]

Season 3

Deborah is very worked up about Kathy and Arthur's wedding and is happy when everything is resolved. She attends the wedding with the rest of her family.[5]

Season 4

Deborah finds Piper crying in the bathroom, and decides to tell James.[6]

Season 6

When Piper tells Deborah that she wants to quit dance, Deborah encourages her to spend one more day at The Next Step before she makes her decision.[7]

Personality

Deborah is greatly invested in James's education, proven when she threatens to pull him out of The Next Step Dance Studio for life due to his poor grades.[4] She can also be extremely high strung and has a no-nonsense personality, as well as insistent upon her children's good manners, as shown by James's response to her question of, "Where did I tell you to keep your hands?" being, "To myself", thus implying that she wants her son to be respectful of Riley in their relationship.[1] Deborah doesn't necessarily approve of her children doing dance, but is always supportive of them.[4][7]

Physical appearance

Deborah is very short. She has light skin, dark hair and brown eyes.
