Specials
Six special episodes of the show have been released. Of these, three were originally released as separate miniseries and later compiled into single episodes. The majority of the specials were released alongside Season 7, but were not officially listed as part of the season; conversely, "Come Together" is listed as the 32nd episode of Season 4.
While none of the specials adhere completely to canon, only the events of "Dancemania Vidcast" are considered to exist in the same universe as the main episodes; both the Christmas special episodes and "What If?" are based, or at least partly based, in an alternate universe, while "Come Together" takes place in an alternative chronology that breaks the fourth wall. The Christmas special is set at a similar time to the events of Season 7 (though the precise time it takes place is never confirmed), while "Dancemania Vidcast" and "What If" take place after the final episode of Season 7. The 200th Episode Celebration is the only episode set completely outside the show, featuring the actors themselves rather than their characters.
Despite the Christmas special officially making up the 181st and 182nd episodes of the show, these are not included in the main episode count; this was confirmed through "Dance, Dance, Resurrection" being celebrated as the 200th episode of the show, despite technically being the 202nd. While the compilations of "200th Episode Celebration" and "Dancemania Vidcast" have always been listed as stand-alone episodes, "What If" has previously been listed as both the 27th and the 25th episode of Season 7; it has since been changed to match the other compilations.
Starting on May 6, 2021 and finishing on June 22, 2021 4 new special mini-series were released under the name "The Next Step Extras". The first, was a series named "Elevating Black Dancers" which looked at the experience of several black cast members of the show and some of their personal struggles. The second, titled "Dance Dilemmas" looked at individual characters discussing the issues they faced within the studio. The third, titled "Dance Captain Diary", sought to unveil the whereabouts of the sacred Dance Captain Diary and the fourth, titled "Dancemania Front Row" was a spin-off of Dancemania which celebrated the most talked about contestants of the previous season.
Due to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic all of the mini-series released following Season 7 were filmed remotely and as such the actors were not in the same room, with the exceptions being Briar Nolet and Myles Erlick who lived together at the time and filmed their "What if?" and "200th Episode Celebration" scenes in company.
