Heathcliff "Heath" is a hip-hop and jazz dancer[4] on A-Troupe, formerly a member of Step Inside.[5]

After A-Troupe's victory at Regionals, Heath auditions for and receives an alternate spot on A-Troupe.[5] However, when the team chooses to attend Dancemania instead, Heath is made a main dancer on A-Troupe.[6]

Biography

Before the show

Heath started dancing eleven years before Season 7[7] and joined J-Troupe, where he formed a rivalry with Ozzy after he was tripped up by him during a dance.[3]

Heath advanced from J-Troupe to B-Troupe.[8]

Season 6

Heath ep 6

Heath argues with Ozzy over who is superior.

Heath is new to B-Troupe and is angered that he is not on A-Troupe, unlike Ozzy, believing that the latter only made it onto A-Troupe due to luck.[8]

Heath performs a duet with Winnie and is criticised by Ozzy for the lack of his chemistry with Winnie.[8]

Heath participates in a rehearsal for the B-Troupe showcase. Heath is annoyed when he is given an inferior role in the dance, by Ozzy.[9]

Season 7

Heath, a member of B-Troupe, is confident when he auditions for one of the two alternate spots on A-Troupe for Nationals and is ecstatic when he is rewarded a spot.[5]

Heath ozzy ep4

Heath yells at Ozzy.

Heath is made the understudy for a Nationals small group routine and is instantly teased by Ozzy. Heath is determined to replace Ozzy as an alternate and attempts to prove his dominance over him, resulting in a dance battle, ending with him, alongside Ozzy, being chastised by Nick and sent to Studio 1 until he is able to resolve his rivalry with Ozzy, else he will be replaced by a B-Trouper. Wanting to be the better person, Heath is the first to apologise to Ozzy and proposes that he performs a duet with him, to which he agrees. Heath's duet with Ozzy is enjoyed by Nick. After the duet, Heath high-fives Ozzy, and despite still believing that the latter is annoying, the former begins to respect him as a dancer.[2]

Determined to prove his commitment to the team, Heath attends an A-Troupe rehearsal, despite being an alternate, on his own merit. Heath feels detached from the rest of A-Troupe. He forms a friendship with Izzy and is reprimanded by Ozzy for doing so.[3]

Heath 709

Heath considers leaving A-Troupe for a soloist spot at Dancemania.

Heath is manipulated by Cleo to leave A-Troupe, due to him being convinced by her to audition as a soloist for Dancemania. Initially, Heath is content with the idea, as he feels like he is not a part of A-Troupe but quickly stops feeling so, when he is invited out with the A-Troupe boys by Ozzy, leading to Heath's joy.[6]

Heath is caught rehearsing by Summer. His commitment being complimented by Summer,[6] Heath is made the replacement for and by Summer at the Dancemania audition, much to Heath's happiness.[10]

Heath is adamant about choosing Dancemania over Nationals and is made a main dancer on A-Troupe, when the former competition is chosen.[4]

Heath 712

Heath forgives Ozzy for insulting him.

Heath grows to become best friends with Ozzy, despite frequently arguing with him,[7] and is a member of the Funder Bros with him, alongside Henry and Richelle.[1]

Heath is excited for Dancemania[11] and competes in both of the A-Troupe group dances.[12][13] Despite the first group dance not winning, Heath is overjoyed at the prospect of The Next Step being able to compete in the resurrection round[12] and is even more so when The Next Step passes through to the finals.[14] Heath feels resent towards not choosing to go to Nationals and is content when his contract as a professional dancer is void, following A-Troupe's disqualification from the competition, and is determined to earn a place on the Nationals team, against B-Troupe.[13]

Season 9

Daisy gets Heath a gift which he acts strangely about and is reluctant to take, even when she makes up the reason for it being a way to thank him for being her best friend. When he later attempts to acquire the gift, Daisy refuses to give it him and Ethan gives him the idea to get Daisy a gift in exchange for his gift. Heath purchases tickets to Daisy’s favourite band Cliffside Sunset’s locally performed show which he gives her in exchange for his gift of a new pair of shoe laces due to Daisy noticing how ragged his were at Nationals.[15]

During the A-Troupe small group choreography round auditions, Grace messes with Heath and refuses to add any of his proposed ideas of a lift in order to please Eldon or a lift. When he accuses her of sabotage, she reminds him that he’s the only one of the two ever to have sabotaged their team. Heath leaves the auditions, however Daisy makes him realise she could have potentially changed before she acts sincere apologises for her actions, yet she didn’t actually believe her apology to him and only did so in order to give her a chance at progressing to the next round of auditions after Ariana reminded her that by sabotaging Heath she is effectively sabotaging herself too.[16]

During the A-Troupe freestyle solos prop round of auditions, Heath and Daisy are both confident that they’ll make the team, however Grace works out that by messing with Daisy she’d be effectively messing with Heath too. Grace steals Daisy’s Bo Staff and has Ariana hide it from her, however Daisy doesn’t use a new prop and performs the choreography that she would have performed with the Bo Staff. Heath makes it back onto A-Troupe, however Daisy fails to do so. Once Daisy is cut from A-Troupe, Heath suggests they get her Bo Staff checked for Grace’s fingerprints, however Daisy doesn’t see the need to do so as she is aware that she should’ve adapted to this unforeseen challenge and selected a new prop.[17]

Heath questions Grace about the disappearance of Daisy’s Bo Staff and tells her that he believes she stole it. When she denies this, Heath promptly reminds her that she’s not above pulling such sneaky moves as she previously attempted to poach him for Ultra Elite at Middle C before Nationals. Heath states that he knows she was behind the theft somehow and how he won’t let it go, until he figures everything out. After seeing Grace perform a recreational solo in Studio A about how much she felt she’d lost, Heath decides to be the bigger person and acknowledges her pain by letting his problems with her go as they prevented him from focusing on what was really important to him with that being A-Troupe and going to Internationals.[18]

Heath is aware that Pete has been dealing with a lot he offers him his support. Heath proposes the pair perform a duet in Studio 1 in order to take his mind off of things, however Pete just wants to go home and eat, yet he eventually agrees to Heath’s idea and tells him they can do so after he eats. Pete initially follows Heath’s direction with the routine, however he eventually begins to offer his own input. Heath supports Pete as he knows he’s struggling with his grandpa’s passing and tells him that other people will be there to provide him with support as long as he lets them in rather than pushes them away.[19]

Heath wants to improve his dance moves for Internationals and is working on perfecting his moon kick as he wanted to wow the judges by performing something new. Izzy offers to help him work on his moon kick, however he tells her that he doesn’t know what he needs or what he will do. Heath later attempts to get his mind off some things, however Izzy inadvertently prevents this from happening as she believes that he dances better when he’s angered with somebody or holding a grudge against a fellow teammate. Heath returns to Studio 1 to continue working on his moon kick, before Izzy arrives and informs him that they knew he thrives on conflict and as such they wanted to create one behind him and themself, before advising him to find a better way of getting energised without requiring the need to argue with other people.[20]

Heath tells both Ariana and Jett that they can’t give Kenzie flowers as an apology gift as she’s actually allergic to them. He later visits Kenzie in the office before she leaves and she tells him that she told Pete that she was alright with just being his friend when in reality she wanted to rekindle their relationship, after Heath tells her that the whole team know just how much she cares about them. Heath tells Kenzie that you can’t wait to tell people how you really feel and implores her to confess her feelings for him before she leaves for France.[21]

Nick tells Heath and Izzy that with Kenzie gone, he has selected them to show the exchange dancer around the studio. Heath and Izzy wait at Cha-Cha’s for Pascale to show up. While they wait, the two predict that she will be so serious as ballet dancers are disciplined and Heath heard they had a huge ballet contingent. The duo hope to learn some more about the French team from Pascale, however their hopes are dashed when they find out that she is the alternate. The pair then show Pascale to Studio 1, where she performs a routine for them which leaves them questioning how a dancer of her standard can be the alternate for the French team.[22]

Heath, Adele, Jett and Pete are all members of a small group selected by Eldon. Heath is supported by Pete who explains how to to perfect his tornado kick and when he is told that he was just marking that one, he is told that marking is for teachers and they had to perfect everything for Internationals. When Eldon attempts to ease the tension by suggesting a water break, Pete re-iterates this. Heath thinks that Pete has a problem with him due to his critical nature towards him, before Pete tells him that he thinks Eldon could be picking a new dance captain for Internationals and as such he was merely aiming to show Eldon that he could lead the team. Heath realises that Pete could have a point, before he is told to ensure his phone is on silent by Pete. Eldon plans on adding a B Twist to his choreography and for Jett to perform it, however when she says she can’t both Heath and Pete offer to teach her how to (despite the fact that Pete would have to learn it himself first), before Adele states she already can perform it and the pair both want to help her perfect it. Eldon decides that the section should be taken in a different direction, before Pete tells him that he came up with some choreography for the routine during the groups water break, before Heath, Adele and Jett all come up with their own choreography as Adele realises that the pair are attempting to become the new dance captain and Jett does so as she believed everyone else just wanted to annoy Eldon. A stressed Eldon notices the rehearsal has been derailed and asks why that has happened and Heath, Pete and Adele tell him that they were all attempting to become dance captain, before Jett realises that everyone was attempting to be dance captain before stating she’d also like to be dance captain. Eldon states that he’s aware everybody wants the dance captaincy and tells him that they’ll figure that out later as in the meantime they needed to focus on that routine. Eldon announces that the following day there will be a dance captain Battle Royale where any A-Trouper who wanted to be considered for the dance captaincy could put their name forward for the competition. The following day during the Battle Royale, Heath is eliminated in the second round of music mystery.[23][24]
