The Next Step is a Canadian mockumentary dance show created by Frank van Keeken. The series follows the lives of an ensemble cast of dancers at The Next Step Dance Studio.

A pilot was filmed in 2011 and shown to Family Channel after which the show was picked up by the channel.

The first episode, "Get the Party Started," aired on March 8, 2013 in Canada on Family Channel. The show was renewed for a second season, which completed airing in January 2015 (with a special airing in March 2015). Two months later, the third season started to air and concluded in December 2015. With its fourth season having concluded several months ago, its fifth season began airing on May 26, 2017 and recently ended. Recently, the show finished filming for a sixth season which began in the UK on 16 July 2018.

There is a spin-off show to The Next Step called Lost & Found Music Studios. It has two seasons, both of which have been released.

Another spin-off, named Taking The Next Step, was made to show behind the scenes for British auditions for Season 4 of The Next Step. The show has filmed one season, with eleven episodes, which originally aired on CBBC from June to August 2016. In February 2017, Taking The Next Step was renewed for season 2. Seasons 1 winner was Kyrhese and season 2 winner was Harrison.

Plot

The Next Step follows a group of teenage dancers in A-Troupe at The Next Step Dance Studio as they prepare for the upcoming Absolute Dance competitions. The show follows the characters through their dancing, relationships, and other struggles in a reality-show format.

The Next Step has garnered acclaim and criticism alike. The series premiere had the largest audience of any series on the Family Channel, with 574,500 P2+ AMA viewers, and over one million P2+ viewers.[1] The show has been nominated for awards at the 2014 and 2015 Canadian Screen Awards, the 2014 Gemini Awards, and the 2016 Young Artists Award. In 2014, Jay Prychidny, a crew member of the show, won the "Best Editing in 1/2 Hour Broadcast Short Form" award for the episode "Winner Takes All" at the Canadian Cinema Editors Awards. Also in 2014, the show won the "Best Cross-Platform Project - Children's and Youth" award at Canadian Screen Awards.[2] Despite this, the show has 6.4/10 rating on IMDb based on 923 user ratings.[3]
