The Next Step is a Canadian mockumentary dance show created by Frank van Keeken. The series follows the lives of an ensemble cast of dancers at The Next Step Dance Studio.

An unaired pilot for the show was filmed in 2011 to show Family Channel what the series would be like.

The Next Step went to series and the first episode, "Get the Party Started," aired on March 8, 2013 in Canada on Family Channel. The show was renewed for a second season, which completed airing in January 2015 (with a special airing in March 2015). Two months later, the third season started to air and concluded in December 2015. The fourth season started to air two months later on February, 15 2016 and concluded on May 17, 2017. With its fourth season having concluded two weeks earlier, its fifth season began airing on May 26, 2017 and ended in December of the same year. Its sixth season aired in the UK on 16 July 2018 and ended in November; it aired in Canada on September 29, 2018 and only finished in April 7, 2019. After a two-year break from filming, its seventh season started airing in the UK on December 13, 2019 and concluded in the UK on August 12, 2020. In April 2022, the shows British broadcaster CBBC officially confirmed it had commissioned an eighth season. On October 3, 2023 CBBC officially confirmed they were filming a ninth season.

There was a short-lived spin-off show to The Next Step called Lost & Found Music Studios, which had two seasons in 2016 and 2017 consisting of fourteen and thirteen episodes respectively — making a total of only twenty-seven episodes. After the show's unexpected cancellation, and with no Season 3, storylines were left suspended with no resolution.

Another spin-off, named Taking the Next Step, was made to show behind the scenes for British auditions for The Next Step Season 4. The show has filmed two seasons, the first of which originally aired on CBBC from June to August 2016. In February 2017, Taking The Next Step was renewed for a second season. The winner of Season 2 would appear in The Next Step Season 6. The Season 1 winner was Khyrese, and the Season 2 winner was Harrison.
